(Security Studies)

INTRODUCTION:

This course is designed for those who want to work in healthcare security. In conjunction with Facilities managers their role encompasses the accessibility, safety and health of patients, visitor and staff. Students gain the PSA licence which enables them to work in wider security environments such as events, sports stadia etc. The skills and knowledge gained in this course are relevant to a broad variety of services where security is a factor.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Leaving Certificate, LCA or QQI Level 4. (Note: Students who wish to progress to policing require passes in LC Maths and English).
  • For mature applicants experience will be considered instead of formal qualifications.
  • CERFL proficiency at B2 for access to Level 5 courses for those whose first language is not English.
  • All applicants will undergo a processing stage during which further information will be gathered in relation to their application. An offer of a place on this course is contingent on the applicant meeting the entry requirements set out here and satisfactory completion of the processing stage.

€300 including QQI examination fees. (Medical card holders exempt from €50). See fees & payment for details.

CERTIFICATION

  • QQI Level 5 Certificate in Security Studies (5M2110).
  • QQI Component Maths (5N1833) – available as an option in the evening for learners needing Maths for progression.

COURSE CONTENT

    Criminology - 5N2107

    Gain an understanding of the behavioural theories associated with crime and its prevention. Look at social and economic factors affecting criminal behaviour. Explore criminal legislation and the role of stakeholders involved in crime prevention. Identify the key characteristics of a broad range of crimes, including drug related crime and outline suitable methods of research and investigation in the area of crime.

    Infection Prevention & Control - 5N3734

    Learn how to prevent the spread of infection in the healthcare setting including hand hygiene and standard precautions. Practical instruction in all aspects of practice including cleaning following blood borne spillage and terminal cleaning.

    Legal Practice & Procedures - 5N1394

    Understand the role of the constitution in the Irish legal system, legal terminology and the structure of the Irish court system. Describe proceedings in a court of law. Explore the impact of European law on the Irish system. Evaluate documents and legislation in your relevant area. Identify main categories of remedies e.g compensation etc.

    Safety & Health at Work - 5N1794

    Develop skills in identifying hazards and carry out risk assessments. Familiarise yourself with the responsibilities and duties of the employer and employee with regards to health and safety. Explore appropriate procedures for use and disposal of hazardous materials and waste in the workplace. Investigate risk facts in relation to safety to include hazards, work environments, work practices, effects of medication, drink and drugs.

    Security Industry Procedures - 5N1785

    Use a variety of supporting security tools and equipment to support the work of the security officer in dealing with a range of incidents in a variety of security settings. Respond appropriately for preserving a scene of crime and the recording of incidents and liaising with appropriate agencies and organisations. Carry out the duties and procedures required of a security officer and employ appropriate security, fire, health and safety procedures in a variety of settings.

    Acquire the writing skills needed for the workplace, learn to speak fluently and coherently in a professional setting, develop interpersonal skills and have an understanding of the impact of ICT on society.

    Planning, preparation and reflection on work placement. Job finding strategies, CV and personal statement preparation, interview skills. Practise employability skills with a view to future planning.

    Health Related Cleaning Skills - 5N3741

    Health Related Cleaning Skills 5N3741 aims to guide the student in the analysis and application of good standards of cleanliness and hygiene in healthcare areas.  The student will gain the knowledge, skills, and competencies to analyse basic cleaning techniques. This component enables the learner to explore and recognise factors which contribute to contamination and facilitates the learner to plan and implement good cleaning schedules in the areas of personal and environmental hygiene practices to prevent cross-contamination across the healthcare sector.

    WORK PLACEMENT / EXPERIENCE

    Students undertake a block work placement of 2 weeks in a healthcare/care environment. Work placement is a highly valued component of the student experience here at the college. An excellent opportunity for you to gain insight into the world of work. Students are encouraged to source their own Work Placement but you will be supported by the Work Placement team should you need assistance to do this.

    This course meets the needs of the security industry requirements in line with the terms of the Private Security Services Act 2004. Career opportunities exist in every area of the healthcare system in hospital and care environments. The qualifications gained allow also for work in the private security industry. Graduates can also apply for a career in An Garda Síochana, the Defence Forces, Prison Services or the Fire Services.
